Driveways vs. patios: specs & patterns
Paver thickness: ICPI guidance typically uses 60 mm pavers for pedestrian areas/patios and 80 mm for residential driveways/vehicular applications.
Patterning: Use herringbone (45° or 90°) in vehicular areas to maximize interlock and resist wheel turning.
Permeable-ready option: Where site and goals allow, a permeable base model can improve drainage and winter performance—even under “non-permeable” surfaces. We’ll advise if that’s a fit.
Hardscape Paver Options
There are many reasons pavers are the best choice for patios & driveways. When properly designed, pavers can help you control landscape erosion. Pavers are also a long-lasting, low maintenance hardscape solution. Most importantly, pavers are available in MORE options – from color to shape to design, customization awaits you. The most common paver materials include:
Concrete Pavers
Interlocking concrete pavers are the most popular choice for driveways & patios. First and foremost, concrete pavers are easy to install (and repair). They’re available in a larger selection of colors and shapes than brick or stone pavers. And they’re weather resistant on top of that. Most color/shape choices, excellent for patios/walks/driveways; easy serviceability.
Traditional brick pavers are the middle ground for cost. Unlike concrete pavers, your color selection is limited when you choose bricks. However, unlike concrete, the color of brick pavers will not fade from wear. Brick pavers do break more easily than concrete pavers too. Classic look and long-lasting color; great for borders/inlays or full surfaces.
Stone Pavers
Stone pavers are the most expensive paver choice. If you really love the natural, timeless look of stone, though, it’s worth the cost. Stone pavers can withstand weather and wear; and are a beautiful choice for patios, walkways, and retaining walls. Premium, timeless finish for feature areas and steps.
